Christmas 2018

2:45am and it’s time for bed. It’s done.

“Because it didn’t snow this year, I left my snow friends here to play with instead.” ~~Santa~~

Christmas morning.
The long-standing tradition of stockings on the bed.
The king size bed we have definitely doesn’t fit everyone anymore! It’s shrinking as the kids get older.
Soon we may have to move this tradition to another room if the big boys keep sticking around.
A funny one about a house key several of the kids got in their stocking.
A house key!????!
Wait, are we moving?
It better be for our house!

The weatherman indicated that we would be having a brown Christmas this year. Well he was mostly right. But when we woke up this morning, EVERYTHING outside was covered in a beautiful thick hoar frost. It was heavenly Father’s way of providing a white Christmas after all!

Cool bicycles.

After we opened stockings, we ate breakfast before going downstairs to see what gifts were waiting good girls and boys.
Sharing Jeff’s canned shrimp from his stocking.

Playing with LEGO from their stocking.

Devin got new flossers. Trying them out.

Brandon checking out the LEGO build.
Lineup on the stairs

(Do you know how many attempts it takes for our family to get one fairly decent picture?? Too many!)
Pictures of the older children before they entered into the family room.

Evan with his Christmas snowman. Everyone could tell whose snowman was whose by the hat on its head.

Rebekka and her snow friend.

Maren was looking all over for her hat this morning. She wanted to wear it around the house but couldn’t find it. She found it on top of her snow friends head!

Devin, yours looks like it’s melting!

Aaren ready for gift opening.

Brandon. Who wore it better?

Cassandra must not have a toque, because her snow friend had a new one on.

Tysyn and his little friend.

Savanna. If only her friend could play with her.

Kim.
Jeff didn’t think his snowman needed the hat.

A new denim quilt. Almost done.

A doll of her own.

This was the cutest exchange between siblings. Rebekka shopped at Santa’s Gone Loonie and bought gift for her biggest brothers. She saw some candles that she thought Devin would like and picked it out all on her own. Devin really liked her gift. Here he is letting her smell it and then taking a sniff before letting her smell again. They went back and forth several times taking turns to smell its scent.

Cassandra got Little Mermaid tickets from Aunt Heather!

Mom got some awesome Christmas ornaments from Joy and Deborah. Each tin star has a name of the Savior on it.

We decided to decorate Jeff’s beard. Those are the little Christmas ornaments that were on the Christmas tree I gave him the first year he was on his mission.

Christmas Dinner at the Hardy’s. Waiting for dad.

Savanna didn’t want to have her picture taken.

So very blessed.

At the dinner table, we were talking about beards, overgrown eyebrows and long hair. I mentioned to Jeff that Heather F. wants Jeff to wear the beard growth shirt that he got last year for Christmas so she can she if there has been any change.
Kim: “You should wear it to the family Christmas party.”
Cassandra: “It’s a years worth of gross; I mean growth.”
Jeff: “Correction. 2 years.”
Jeff: “I think I’m stuck at Truckerly.”
Brandon: “I think I got stuck at How long is this going to take?”
Aaren: “No, it’s more like Are we there yet?”
Haha.

Aunt Karen went to Utah and asked that we check in on Grandma today. I took a few of the kids to visit her after lunch while the turkey was cooking.
The weather is rather nice and Tysyn was wearing flip flops.
T- “Wait for me, my flip flop is falling off. I got to waddle like amarshmallow!”
Tysyn was concerned about Grandma when she didn’t respond to us right away.
“Why are Grandma Selman’s eyes closed?”
“The gunk in her eyes has glued her eyes shut.”
Once I washed her face with a warm wet washcloth and she opened her eyes, he was put at ease.

I love you Grandma!
Grandma often asks where her dad is. (Oh dad. Where’s my dad? My dad). We don’t know if she is talking about Heavenly Father, her dad Harden Luke West or grandpa Barker Selman whom she often referred to as dad. One time when she asked out loud, I told her dad was in Heaven. I wasn’t wrong. That is one of the first questions I’m going going to ask when I get to heaven. Who was she talking about!?
A few days ago, Grandma Selman fractured one of the small bones in her ankle. Her ankle got caught under her wheelchair as it was pushed forward and that caused the fracture. She doesn’t weight bear so the doctor decided to leave it to heal.
Cassandra was visiting with me and decided to name Great Grandma’s wheelchair Rudolph.
So Grandma got run over by a reindeer! Haha.

I loved the supper meal today. Everyone of the family was at the table. As we approach this Christmas season, this is probably the last year that I can forcibly make everyone there. .  :/
After we ate, we all got into the van to go sing to the ladies I prepare meals for. It was their pleasure to have my family sing for them. Joy didn’t get to church today and appreciated the Christmas Hymns sung to her. We sang quite a few.

Deborah mentioned that we sounded really good. Cassandra, our ever witty one exclaimed, “imagine how we would sound if we practiced!!”After our singing and once shoes and boots were back on, the kids chose treats off the candy wreath. Even the big boys! Rebekka didn’t get one because she didn’t eat her supper. She knew she wouldn’t get a treat before we left our house. As much as I wanted to let her choose a treat, the siblings were adamant she couldn’t have one. She gets lots when they aren’t with us delivering weekly meals, so she will be ok. She didn’t have a big a meltdown as I thought. She is definitely maturing.
As we left their home, we planned to go directly to Lethbridge but Evan declared that he had to go to the bathroom. So we drove back home for everyone to go to the bathroom before heading to Lethbridge to see the Nativity at the Lethbridge church building. I miss the Calgary pageant. I don’t even know the last time we were home at Christmas time and could see it. Mom asked me the other day what year I participated in the pageant as Mary. I guess it was about 1991-1993. That was a lot of years ago!!

After the performance and once we were all belted in the van, the youngest kids complained about being hungry. I brought out treats I got from mom when she came to visit. We passed the bag of chocolates around on the way home. Aaren drove. It’s a big responsibility driving the van.
Because Aaren was driving, we switched some of the usual seats around. I sat in the VERY BACK of the van. It’s quite the experience. Kinda fun. Definitely didn’t get as many questions riding in the back. (Mom I want... mom can I have.. mom help..) It certainly like riding in a school bus! Probably even more bouncy!
I am so grateful for my family but I wish I could help the kids observe the sabbath a bit better. Today didn’t really feel like Sunday. I don’t know how to change behaviour, except by setting an example and sharing testimony. But it’s hard to feel the spirit when contemporary music is blasting in my ear in the back of the van. Sigh.
Some days I wish the boys were little. I would love to try raising them again.
I’m looking forward to the Christmas holidays with my family.
