Wildflower Girl

Mrs. Kirkham, our 90+ year old neighbor just moved into the seniors' lodge here in town. She has a great big patch of wildflowers in her garden. (OK-It used to be a garden!) Cassandra had fun walking through the patch and I had fun taking tons of pictures of her. We also have several vases full of the flowers adorning the table because once someone picks them, all follows suit.

So here is the work in progress. Yep, the garden is as big as it looks! Last week we enjoyed some yummy rhubarb crisp. We have two huge plants to pick from. I have seen most of our garden plants and we are almost able to see complete rows. We still have to watch Maren carefully though as she doesn't realize that the tiny plants DIE if stepped on! Wouldn't it be nice if it worked that way with weeds. I'd be out there getting a lot of exercise if you could make 'em die that way. Instead I use a very old-fashioned weeder. It works great to weed between the rows. If I continue to use the weeder all season long, I will truly have some amazing upper arm muscles! (The first time I used it I thought my arms would fall off- they hurt so bad.)

Another week

It has been a long time since I have spent time at this old computer. The kids are all in bed and asleep. There is a little free time until I need to crash too. I thought I would write about the latest happenings at our house even thought they might be completely boring to you.

Our garden is mostly planted. We have a big one again this year. It is about 20 feet wide by 50 feet long. Our planting results- 9 1/2 rows potatoes, 2 rows carrots, 1 row beans, 1 row peas, 3 rows corn (for Justin and Heather mostly), 3 hills squash, 2 hills pumpkins, 12 tomato plants, 1 cherry tomato plant, 4 green pepper plants, 1 sweet banana pepper, 1 jalapeño. Hopefully this week I can plant some onions, swiss chard, cucumbers and a few beets.
I am well past the official planting deadline and the tomatoes are still not surrounded by the plastic frame but all is growing and seeming to do well. There are many sunflowers volunteering throughout the garden and we plan to leave a couple to make the garden look pretty besides functional!
I took a quick trip through the garden this evening to see how the squash were fairing that Brandon and I planted last night. Most of them are up and Brandon was so excited to see the little leaves poking through. We also noticed the corn starting to appear! A few more veggies to notice and Brandon can mark of a requirement for another cub badge. (Any guesses on the badge?- Yep, the gardener badge. Wait until I make him weed it!!!!!!!!!!!)

The weather has been so nice lately. Almost a little too nice. Most of the kids and I are already sporting our farmer tans. They would be perfect if we really were farmers!
Thursday and Friday were the days for the Division 1 endurance run and sports day. The boys had so much fun and the rest of us enjoyed watching the fun. Aaren and Cassandra can't wait for their turns.

This week the kids will be moving to the new school. (They are suppose to. We have heard rumors around town that it might not happen but, we'll see.) They will walk their desk belongings to the school on Wednesday and then school will be out on Thursday and Friday so that the desks can be moved. We are all looking forward to the new changes. I've had the privilege of touring the school already while it was still under construction. It was one of the perks of being on the school parent council. I love it. It will be great to have the Hub/Parent Link Center there too.

The boys are looking forward to the fathers and son's camp out this weekend at Spring Glen Park. So am I! I think that the girls and I will plan a little activity too. I plan to send the camera with Jeff. We'll see if they come home with any photos. Last year at the same camp out, Jeff and his brother Landon killed a porcupine that his other brother Jared and son Ammon stumbled upon. Jeff and Landon at least weren't senseless in their slaughter. They ate it for breakfast!!!!! The highlight for the my little boys was in bringing the quills, and the claws, home to show off. Oh the joys of boys! I hope that this year won't be quite as eventful.

Well, the time is past for me to quit. I need to retire or the kids will be up for school and I'll still be asleep as Maren eats cereal out of the box while sitting on the table. The school boys will find all the "hidden snacks" and take a few for recess and Aaren and Cassandra will have half the Lego bucket dumped before they even get dressed!
